My CrossFit Familia

I don’t have much family. I am divorced. My parents are dead. My brother and sister and I rarely talk. I have not spoken with my cousins or remaining aunt and uncle in over 30 years. It’s just me, my daughter and our two dogs. Sometimes I feel like a 54-year-old orphan.

CrossFitters talk about their fellow athletes like they are family. But for me, as pathetic as this sounds, they really are my family. My box, Crossfit Cityplace, is family owned. So, when my Coach Matt and his fiance Brittany – both superb coaches, athletes and business partners – invited me to their wedding in Cancun, Mexico I said YES. Hell YES.

I knew this would be an epic wedding. Brittany’s parents, Tania and Armando, are also involved in the business and devout CrossFitters of a Certain Age. They are not only two of the most generous, funny and real people I have ever met, they are also Puerto Rican.

Let me just say this: If you are ever invited to a Puerto Rican wedding – even if it’s in Timbuktu – take out a second-mortgage on the house, get a ticket and GO! These folks know the meaning of family and fun.

There are two CrossFit boxes in Cancun. Despite our best intentions, we didn’t make it to either one. You take a bunch of CrossFitters of any age to a 5-star, all inclusive resort on the beach in Mexico and the closest they’re going to come to working out is the Mexican WOD – water aerobics – that we watched in awe from our lounge chairs by the pool.

I’m not a drinker but my comrades approached alcohol with the same 3-2-1 enthusiasm they do their WODs. God love ’em. And dance…you cannot wear out a CrossFit athlete on a dance floor. Plus, we’re dancing to the same music we WOD to, so it’s like a cake walk.

The amazing thing was that the resort did not run out bacon or tequila – staples of the paleo diet. And they allowed  Coach Tommy to stay the entire 4 days, despite his bottomless stomach.

You can’t really appreciate what CrossFit does to the human body until you see your CrossFit family all shined up and with their clothes on. Let’s just say all the squats have really paid off for Tania.

Give me another Kleenex, please

I cry at most weddings and this was no exception. I balled when Armando walked Brittany down the beach to the altar. I cried when Matt gave his speech. I cried when Armando danced alone with his daughter. I cried when Matt’s mom gave her speech. Thank God I had the common sense to wear waterproof mascara.

I’ve heard it said that you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family – unless you are like me, and have virtually no family. Then, you get to pick your family. I have picked mine.

Lucky me.
