These are a few of my favorite things…

Below are products and services I use and why. Some of them I discovered through trial and error, some were love at first use.

Move Free Joint Support – Advanced + MSM & Vitamin D3

MoveFree1Schiff Pharmaceuticals

When I started CrossFit I had chronic pain in my right shoulder, most likely from decades of swimming. I breathed on my left side, which created extra torque on my right shoulder. I went to my chiropractor, which helped but did not completely eliminate the pain.

I had heard about glucosamine and decided to try it, knowing that it would take at least 3-4 weeks for it to begin working. I tried a generic, which did nothing. Then I tried Osteo Bi-Flex, which also did nothing. Finally, I tried Move Free Joint Support Advanced + MSM and D3. Within a month that pain disappeared and has not returned. I can now do pain-free handstand push-ups.

Schiff makes several different kinds of Move Free joint support products. I use the Glucosamine, Chondroitin + MSM, which has a skier on the box. Occasionally I have also used the Advanced, which has a runner on the box. Seems to work just as well.

Quest Protein Bars

I will be the first to admit that I am powerless over Quest protein bars, especially the chocolate chip cookie dough. Besides the taste, Quest bars are low carb (only 3 grams of net carbs in the chocolate chip cookie dough and those carbs are from nuts, not sugar!) Quest bars also contain 20 grams of protein isolate.CookieDough

The down side…while most of the bars are sweetened with stevia, lo  han gua and erythritol, some contain sucralose (aka Splenda). Now, I am extremely sensitive to Splenda. I causes massive intestinal distress in my gut and I avoid it  whenever possible, using stevia instead. However, the amount of sucralose in these bars must be very small because it does not cause me any intestinal problems.

If a plain Quest bar isn’t enough, Quest has concocted recipes using their bars for baked goods, which look so amazing I am afraid to try them.

Preparation HPreparation_H_Ointment_Main

It’s not just for hemorrhoids anymore. Nothing, and I mean nothing, works better for me than Prep H on rips caused by too many pull-ups. For more information on how to purchase and apply Prep H without embarrassment, click here.

Arnica plant

Arnica plant

Arnica (pronouced “Ah-Ni-Ca” by my Aussie friend)

My friend and training partner, Lynn, turned me on to arnica. Lynn, an Aussie who is also a paramedic/firefighter, physical therapist, elite masters runner and single mom, claimed it would repair my sore muscles faster than the stinky, icy, hot concoctions I was rubbing on my muscles.

Lynn was right. Pain relief was almost immediate. It also works miracles on lightening those ugly blue/green bruises you get when you miss that box jump and bruise you shin.
